New Visa Waivers (S.I. No. 17 of 2026)
Diplomatic Ease: Holders of diplomatic passports from 10 additional states—including Albania, Colombia, Georgia, Peru, and Qatar—can now enter Ireland for 90 days without a visa for official meetings and negotiations.
A recent WRC ruling has sent a clear message to Irish employers: What your managers say behind closed doors can cost you five figures.
The "6 month rule" for probations
The Statutory Limit: A probation period cannot exceed 6 months for most employees. The Exception: It can only be extended to 12 months in very limited, "exceptional" circumstances (such as a long absence like sick leave) where it is clearly in the employee's interest.
If you feel like you've spent the last two years just trying to keep up with Sick Pay changes and Remote Work requests, you aren't alone. But as of 2026, the biggest shift in Irish employment law in a generation is the Auto-Enrolment (AE).
The WRC has ramped up enforcement. If an inspector finds you have not issued Terms of Employment they do not just issue a warning anymore.
The Fine: Up to 1500 euro per employee as a fixed term notice.
